Everything You Need to Know About Tipping Your Hairstylists

When it comes to traditional tipping etiquette, most agree that waiters and waitresses should receive between 10 to 20% of the total bill of a meal for their services. The percentage chosen is generally adjusted based on the level of service provided—with exceptional service being rewarded at a rate of 20% or higher. Proper etiquette regarding gratuity beyond the restaurant; however, tends to get a little less clear. In circumstances involving baggage handlers or cab drivers, many people know that the service warrants tipping but are completely lost when it comes to determining the standard rate of gratuity. This is especially true in places like hair salons where a variety of people may work together to provide a service. Being unsure of the standard gratuity rate for the service, who to tip or even whether a tip is warranted can be confusing and uncomfortable for salon visitors. Avoid this awkward moment and discover the proper way to tip your hairstylists:

1.  Is it appropriate to tip hairstylists?

Not only is it appropriate—it is considered proper etiquette to tip your hairstylists. This is standard for most situations where a professional is providing a service, with exceptions to service fields like doctors, nurses, lawyers, and educators. As it is common practice, failing to tip would indicate that you were unhappy with the service provided. There are visits to the hair salon which do not warrant tipping, however. For instance, if you stop by solely to purchase a retail product or a gift card.

2. What is the standard tip amount?

Like in a restaurant, there is no one standard amount that is deemed acceptable. If you are unsure of how much to tip your hairstylists, you may be tempted to grab whatever cash you have on hand and use that as the tip. Instead, use the same formula that you would use in a restaurant as a basic rule of thumb. Most salon goers tip between 15 to 20% of the pre-tax amount listed on the final bill for the services provided.

3. What if a stylist and a colorist both provided service within the salon?

This is a common occurrence in hair salons in South Florida and around the globe. You may receive a haircut from a stylist and then highlights from a colorist. This is often the most confusing part of tipping hairstylists for clients. In this scenario, you should still tip around 20% of the service cost but divide the tip between both parties. If one staff member provided exceptional service or spent additional time on your hair, you can adjust the tip amounts accordingly.

4. Should I tip assistants and owners?

This is a big area of confusion for many salon clients. This is because tippers assume that the assistant will receive a portion of the tip given to the stylist or colorist, but this is not always the case. If an assistant provides a hands-on service during your appointment, it is considered proper etiquette to tip them as well. Unlike with the stylist or colorist, however, it is more common to tip the assistant a set amount, ranging between $1-$7. For a shampoo only, it is acceptable to stick to the lower end of the spectrum, but if the assistant washes, blow-dries and brushes your hair, consider moving up the scale. Another area of debate is whether to tip the owner of the salon if they are providing the service. Not tipping the owner of the salon is an outdated tradition that is no longer practiced in modern tipping etiquette. This was done because owners had higher skill levels and higher rates. Today, salon owners are often classified as master stylists, but their rates are not much different than other stylists in the salon. Because of this, owners should be tipped using the same scale of 15-20% of the final bill.

5. What about offers?

Offers are a hot commodity in hair salons. Whether redeeming an offer for a free trim or a highly discounted color, it is important to note that the stylist will still put in the same amount of effort. In these situations, it is considered good etiquette to tip according to the pre-discounted cost of the service being provided. If you are unsure of the full price, adjust the percentage rate so that it falls above the usual 15-20% rate. On the other hand, if you have a coupon for retail products and make a purchase without receiving service during the visit, there is no need to tip at all.

6. Do I have to tip with cash?

In today’s tech-savvy world, many salon goers prefer to skip the cash and pay for services using a debit or credit card. Most top hair salons near Fort Lauderdale/Miami and across the country, have upgraded to point-of-sale systems that enable clients to tip using their card. This, however, is not always the case. If you are visiting a hair salon for the first time and are unsure if this option is available, it is best to call ahead and ask or bring cash to err on the side of caution.

7. What if I am unhappy with the service provided?

All hairstylists have one thing in common—they want you to leave the hair salon feeling fantastic about your experience and your results. While some people are easily able to express their dissatisfaction, others fear that their stylist will take it personally. It may be tempting to skip the tip altogether, or simply give a standard tip and flee the salon, but honesty is always the best policy when it comes to working with your stylist. If you are unhappy with your cut, color or longer than anticipated wait time, be sure to mention it. Your stylist will aim to resolve the dilemma before you leave the salon.

As in most industries, tipping is a gift given to your hairstylist for the services that they provide. There are several factors that may alter this amount—someone with a long-term stylist may feel inclined to tip much more than someone visiting a new one, or perhaps a stylist goes above and beyond what is expected. While tipping etiquette serves as a guideline, you should consider your own experiences and determine which amount you are comfortable giving. In either case, tips are always appreciated by hair stylists who strive to bring your vision to life. In need of a cut or color to make yours a reality? Your hair routine in Florida: Tips for humid and hot weather

What’s not to love about the Florida climate? Blue skies, sun and warmth – amazing! But, it can leave your hair a little frazzled, and if you don’t know how to tame the frizz that can lead to an uphill struggle. From sun protection and tea tree oil uses for hair to how to wash and style your hair, these top tips for hot and humid weather are here to help.

Protect it from the sun

Covering up to the keep the sun off your head will not only keep you cooler, it’ll also protect your hair. And who doesn’t love a stylish sun hat or headscarf?

On top of that, covering your head will help your scalp retain much-needed moisture. It’ll also control flyaway strands that inevitably lead to tangling.

Watch how you wash

Avoiding over-washing is one of the key aspects of looking after your hair anywhere. And this is particularly true in the Florida heat and humidity. Every time you shampoo your hair you run the risk of stripping it of its natural oils – the oils it needs to stay healthy.

Try to limit the amount of times you wash your hair – every other day or even less is a good plan. And treat it to a deep conditioning treatment once a week too

Brunette Wet Hair Hair Care

Pamper your hair after being on the beach

After a day on the beach, the likelihood is that your hair will be a little frazzled. Whether it’s from the sun or the sea, the chances of you keeping it covered all the time are pretty slim. And so, they should be – enjoyment should be the focus. Having a day of fun can leave your hair a little stressed, though, so pampering it when you get in is a really good idea. This could include a cooling rinse and wash with a moisturizing shampoo.

Blonde+Hair+Windy

When your strands do need a little rejuvenating, essential oils like tea tree oil for hair can really help. Along with soothing itchiness and even fighting dandruff, using tea tree oil for hair can also deliver essential moisture to your scalp, roots and strands. Soothing simplicity.

Protect it from extra heat

Your hair’s going to be exposed to plenty of heat from the sun, so the last thing it needs is extra exposure – that can lead to stress, split ends and even more frizz. However, that doesn’t mean you need to lock away your hairdryers or irons.

Turning the dial down to the cool setting when you dry may take longer, but it’ll limit the amount of heat that goes through your hair. Applying heat protection products before you reach for the stylers will help too. The key is to limit the amount of usage, and use protection when you do.

Tie it up

Finally, when your hair’s really not behaving, you can go for an effortless updo to tame the frizz. It could be a messy bun or a cool beach braid. Whatever you go for, keep it loose, as tying too tight could pull and damage your hair, especially if it’s been suffering from the heat and humidity.

5 Secrets to Achieving Flawless Nails

While we agonize over the health and appearance of our hair, often we are quick to cover nail imperfects with polishes or acrylics. Much like hair, however, healthy and beautiful nails start from within. One of the greatest ways to ensure that your nails are healthy is to start with a balanced diet. A diet that is rich in key nutrients like biotin, iron, Vitamin B12, magnesium and protein will quickly transform dry, brittle nails. Other steps, however, can aid in ensuring that your nails look their best all year long. Discover 5 secrets to achieving flawless nails:

essential-oil-nail-care

Liven Up Unpainted Nails

When there’s no time to get to Inscape Beauty Salon for a Signature Service manicure in Davie, FL and your nails are looking dull, you can bring back their luster in a matter of seconds. Apply a dab of cuticle oil to each nail and they will look like they’ve just received a luxurious nail treatment. If you don’t have any cuticle oil, any moisturizing oil will do the trick. Coconut, olive and argan oils work particularly well.

Make Light Hues Pop

How many times have you purchased a nail polish hue that appeared bright in the bottle, only to discover it was much lighter when applied to the nails? We avoid this conundrum by using Sundays 10-free polishes which are highly pigmented (non-toxic, vegan and cruelty free, too). If you don’t have a bottle of Sundays 10-free polish on hand, make your pale color pop by using a white primer underneath.

nail-polish-remover-healthy

Prevent Dark Color from Staining

Even the best polish removers struggle to remove stains from black or dark blue hues. To avoid the stained look after removal, apply a base coat before you apply color. The base coat will absorb the color instead of your nails and cuticles. This simple step also extends the life of your manicure for a few days longer.

food-drink-tea-kitchen

Repair a Broken Nail

Broken nails are painful! Instead of clipping the nail down or suffering through the pain, mend the nail back together. Simply cut open a tea bag, empty its contents and then cut the bag down to the size of your nail. Apply a clear base coat directly to the nail and then place the nail size portion of the tea bag on top. Ensure that it is smooth and free of air bubbles. Leave it in place to dry and then add another coat of clear polish. The nail will be strengthening and mended until it is able to heal.

nail-healthy-product

Opt for Nail Healthy Products

You certainly wouldn’t accept toxic chemicals in your face lotion or foundation, so adopt the same practices when it comes to your nails. While some polishes look fantastic, they are choked full of harmful chemicals. These chemicals are potentially harmful to your overall health and can further dry out or weaken the nails over time. Instead, splurge on high-quality bases, topcoats and polishes. We recommend Sundays 10-free which is free of 10 of the most concerning chemicals commonly found in other polishes. If you prefer to skip the DIY approach, visit a nail salon near Fort Lauderdale that embraces these products such as Inscape Beauty Salon.

Are your nails in need of some serious TLC? Schedule a manicure, pedicure (or both!) at Inscape Beauty Salon today. We offer two nail packages, including our “rush hour” and “signature” services. From our top of the line Sundays 10-free polishes in Davie to our hydrating and purifying soaks, we believe that looking your best starts with feeling your best.

Is Your Nail Polish Putting Your Health at Risk?

Whether you consider yourself to have less than healthy habits or are a self-proclaimed health and fitness guru, we all take a glance at the ingredient labels displayed on our favorite dishes and guilty pleasures. Some of us are simply curious, while others see it as a necessary measure because of food allergies or strict dietary regulations. In either scenario, we often extend this practice and examine the ingredients contained within our hair care products, facial lotions, and medications. One product that an overwhelming majority of girls and women of all ages use regularly, however, is often overlooked. Even those who use nail polish on a weekly basis would find it difficult to name a single ingredient listed on their signature hue.

The Problem

Shockingly, the list of ingredients is long for most brands and even more alarming, many of those listed are toxic.  From TPHP, an ingredient that disrupts the endocrine system and negatively impacts reproductive health to Dibutyl Phthalate, a respiratory irritant; the list of harmful ingredients continues. Those fortunate enough to know of the harmful chemicals contained in typical nail polishes have struggled to find a safe alternative that provides lasting results and a wide range of colors.

The Solution

At Inscape Beauty Salon, we understand that looking your best is only possible when you are feeling your best. Because of this, we strive to provide our clients with exceptional products that have an equal focus on enhancing beauty and living a healthy lifestyle. To eliminate the risks of health concerns associated with the toxic chemicals found in many nail polishes, we are proud to offer a safer alternative—Sundays Nails 10-free non-toxic polishes.

Sundays healthy nail polish non toxic in salon

This means that their nail polishes are free of 10 of the most potentially harmful ingredients used in manufacturing nail polishes. Regardless of which product or shade you choose for your nails, you will not find these toxic chemicals in any Sundays nail 10 toxic-free product:

1. TPHP

2. Dibutyl Phthalate

3. Toluene

4. Xylene

5. Ethyl Tosylamide

6. Camphor

7. Formaldehyde

8. Formaldehyde Resin

9. Parabens

10. Tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide

When it comes to Sundays nails, 10 toxic free is just the beginning. The brand is also cruelty-free and vegan friendly.

What does “cruelty-free” mean in cosmetics?

orange-tabby-cat-beside-fawn-short-coated-puppy-46024.jpg

Many companies who create cosmetics or other commercial products test their products on animals before they make these products available for sale to humans. The animals enduring this painful testing includes everything from hamsters and rabbits to dogs and cats. They are unwillingly subjected to chemicals which are toxic or even poisonous in order to determine if their products are fit for human use. This is a cruel practice and many animals are harmed during the process. Companies who focus on cruelty-free products do not harm or experiment on any animals. Instead, they typically use ingredients which are already known to be safe and are free of chemicals that cause concern, thus making them a safer and healthier option.

What is a “vegan-friendly” cosmetic?

When most people think of the word “vegan”, they think solely of a person’s diet. While not consuming animal-derived foods is a large part of the lifestyle, this concept goes further. A vegan cosmetic product also does not contain any ingredients that are derived from animals. This includes common ingredients like beeswax, honey, lanolin, and collagen.

Not all products that are cruelty-free are vegan-friendly and vice versa. Sundays nails 10 toxic-free products, however, are not tested on animals and do not contain any ingredients that are derived from animals. Sundays nails, 10 toxic free formulation is long-lasting and available in a wide array of hues so that you don’t have to sacrifice on anything to eliminate harmful chemicals from your cosmetics.

If you’re ready to make a healthier choice for your overall health, environment, and nails in Davie, Florida, book your appointment at Inscape Beauty Salon! We proudly offer full-service manicures and pedicures using Sundays nails 10 toxic free shades, including our “Rush Hour” or “Signature” packages.

Pack Comfortable Shoes

After agonizing over which pair of your peep-toe pumps best showcases your fresh pedicure, you opt for style over comfort. You relish your choice until you are several hours into casino night. Achy feet can seriously put a damper on an otherwise exciting night on the town. Trust us-- pack the comfortable back-up pair of shoes.

Don’t Forget to Hydrate Your Face

Opting for a stay at a nearby hotel after a long night out? Even if your home is within a close proximity to our hair salon, a hotel stay feels like a vacation--only without the jet-lag and need for a house-sitter. Unfortunately, being away from home can throw off your daily beauty routine. One of the biggest beauty blunders this results in is forgetting to wash make-up off before bed. Pack your favorite facial cleanser or wipes ahead of time to keep your skin looking flawless.

Disconnect

While your surroundings may change, if you remain connected to your cell phone and email all evening it will be hard to decompress. This sounds like a simple step but it can make a world of difference! Although most of us know that stress can negatively affect our health, it can also affect our looks. Allow yourself to relax and rejuvenate.

If you plan to spend the whole weekend away from home, consider an overnight hair style to make up for not having access to all of your usual styling tools. If you typically curl your hair with a wand, for instance, twirl your hair into several little buns and secure them in place before going to sleep. In the morning, you will have tight curls-- and more time to focus on fun before returning home.

Blast from the Past: Our Favorite Hair Cuts Throughout the Decades

Throughout the ages, women have viewed their hair styles as the ultimate form of expression. Trends have come and gone (and come back again), but there is no denying that some cuts are simply timeless. Check out our favorite haircuts throughout the decade to find your very own signature style:

sixties hair styles

1960

A decade best known for bouffant and beehives, the most popular hairstyles of the 1960’s in America were all about maximizing volume. Whether short and chic or long and flowing, locks were polished to perfection. While we adore the classic pageboy fringe and the emphasis on French coiffures, this era gave us a cut that is still a salon favorite today: the inverted bob. Today, this hair cut looks nearly identical to those sported by women of the ‘60s. It exudes elegance and strength, is low maintenance and looks fabulous on all face shapes. Paired with highlights or left natural, the inverted bob has certainly withstood the test of time.

1970

A legendary decade in American history—marked by the Disco music craze, bell bottoms and polyester leisure suits—the 70’s gave us a plethora of inventive hairdos. Surprisingly, however, many of these were more natural than those of the decade’s past. Women began to focus less on short, polished locks and instead opted for shoulder length (or longer) styles. One of the most notable haircuts of the 70’s was made famous by actress Farrah Fawcett. This style popularized the “feathered look” for an entire generation, though today, this haircut is a rare choice. Another look from this decade, known as the “shag”, however, has retained its popularity and continues to be a popular style.

One of the most prominent features of hairstyles in the 1980’s is the use of perms. Men and women of all ages participated in this treatment which created tightly wound, long-lasting curls. Often paired with a fringe and feathered layers, volume was a top priority. In search of maximum height, the mullet became an iconic haircut for this era. Today, haircuts in South Florida typically aim to give a more natural appearance but the focus on volume and fabulous fringes remains the same.

1990

Every hair stylist in Broward County and across the country knew exactly which cut clients were speaking of when they said a single word: Rachel. The “Rachel” haircut was popularized by actress Jennifer Aniston on the television series Friends. The actress donned a square layered, shoulder-length hairdo that every woman had to have. Other notable cuts from the ‘90s include the beloved pixie cut, classic bobs and choppy layers with blunt bangs. These styles can easily be modernized to look fresh today (just leave out the 90’s butterfly clips).

Early 2000’s

With the fear of Y2K at bay, the world was once again free to focus on making their hair look fantastic. During this period, hair extensions were more popular than ever, along with ultra thick blonde highlights and natural looking curls. Celebrities in the early 2000’s embraced side-swept bangs, diagonal cuts and face framing layers. This decade also popularized the long locks with beachy waves style we still see today. Again, timeless haircuts like bobs, pixie cuts and shoulder length hair also reigned supreme with subtle changes from those of decades past.

Looking Ahead to 2020

Now that we have taken a thorough look back at some of the greatest hair cuts and styles throughout recent decades, we can’t help but wonder what the future will bring. One of the greatest predictors of future trends always lies in those of the past. That being said, expect vintage looks like the rounded bob of the 1960’s and the shaggy layers of the 1970’s to be among the most popular looks for the new year (with modern twists). Other classics like the pixie, the French girl bob and the bold fringe will remain staple cuts, meanwhile newer looks like asymmetrical bobs, long layers and micro fringes will earn their place in hair history.
